Construction is planned to commence later this month, with completion estiimated for November this year. As you can well imagine this is a very special thing for children, previously abandoned. The children in our Cuttack home are extremely excited about the purchase of the land for the home and can’t wait to have their own building to call home!

This month the children received their results for thier final exams. By the hard work of the children and encouragement from the house parents, Pastor MC Varghese and Annie, all 15 boys have passed and moved on their next grades. 5 boys ranked 1st and 3 boys ranked 2nd in their classes. We are really proud that these boys who had minimal or no previous education have been able to achieve this and we hope and pray that they will continue to succeed in the future. The boys recently took part in their annual school sports/ activity day and enjoyed winning prizes for activites such as 100m sprint, sack race, musical chair and the mathematics game. This month they are also having their summer break and are enjoying themselves very much.

The children and house parents from our home in Cuttack send their love and thank you all very much for making a huge difference in their lives.

Dr Abraham’s Australian Visit Report

Dr Abraham’s visit concluded on Tuesday 1 May, his daughter Rosin having returned to Delhi one week earlier. Travelling from Mt Isa in the north to Burnie in the south, Dr Abraham experienced continued interest in the Bethesda Children’s homes from people in Australia keen to contribute meaningfully to the development of facilities and programs for those who are desperately poor.

Three different people during this visit approached Dr Abraham with gift of funds to actually construct a children’s home, around $40 000 each. These gifts were very welcome since there are a number of communities with children very much in need of a stable and caring place to provide hope for their future.

Another vital part of Heart for India’s support for Bethesda Children’s homes is the regular contribution of small gifts, these enable the development program that is underway to train the House Parents in these homes. You can set up regular contributions from your bank account or credit card at Heart for India website, click here.
On Saturday 10 December, Dr Abraham opened a new facility for a children’s home at Andra Pradesh. This facility incorporating children’s home, carer’s accommodation, and church/community meeting area was completed for around 60 000AUD. The project was funded by a group of active supporters in Mt Isa Community Church – an outstanding achievement.

Graham Hill visit to India

Graham leaves on Tuesday 13 December to visit Dr Abraham and his team. While in India he will visit some of the schools, children’s homes, and feeding projects. The purpose of the trip is to prepare the HFI project description for 2012-2015 according to AusAid requirements which are administered for us by Global Development group. We’ll keep you updated with photos from the trip.

Simpler donation processes

The growing complexity of requirements associated with operating the HFI Trust Fund prompted a review of our donation processes. The revised arrangements are simpler and require less management time by the committee who all contribute this time voluntarily. Special thanks go to Malcolm Borgeaud and Marissa Burton of Borgeaud and Co Accountants who have given many hours to operating and auditing the HFI Trust Fund. In the future donations for HFI projects can be made directly to our partner organisation Global Development Group who will issue receipts on behalf of HFI. This also includes the option of regular monthly donations from your credit card account. Please refer to the donations page for further details.

Dr Abraham meets Governor General

The Governor General and Dr Abraham were able to discuss the conditions of disadvantaged children and women in India and the initiatives Heart for India is undertaking on their behalf. The Governor General was very interested and knowledgeable concerning India and its culture. She added encouragement and support for Dr Abraham’s efforts from her broad experience as an advocate for the rights of marginalised women and children. It is hoped there may be some further opportunity to connect on these matters during the Governor General’s official visit to India in 2012.

Champions of Cuttack

Each Bethesda Children’s home is literally the story of champions… living examples of courage, determination, resilience, selfless sacrifice… these homes house amazing stories.

Sadly there are thousands of utterly destitute children in Indian cities, and some suffer an untimely end. The children in the homes are survivors, they have hung on and by God’s grace been rescued to a new life. Here is one story from the Cuttack home…

Chandan Sabar is a 10 year old boy whose father died when he was 5 years old. After the death of his father, his mother left home and left the poor child to fend for himself. He had nowhere to go and no one to look after him. He roamed in the village and used to starve for days at a stretch. Seeing the pitiable condition of the boy, one the villagers who had heard of the Bethesda boys home brought him in. Today he is happy that he is part of a loving family and a bunch of friends. He is very happy here and is doing very well in school.

The key to the success of any home is of course the House Parents, who give of themselves generously and consistently to love and care for these boys.

Pastor M C Varghese and his wife Annie have been house parents at the home in Cuttack since its opening. They used to visit a tribal place called Kandhma, Orissa to bring help to the community from their church. During one of their visits, the condition of the children really impacted them and they wanted to help the children. At this time, founder of HFI, Dr Abraham was also praying about starting an orphanage in the State of Orissa. M C and Annie informed him about the condition of the children and they agreed to found the boy’s home in Cuttack to meet the urgent need. M C Varghese and Annie are also pastors of the local church in Cuttack and manage the community centre which operates in conjunction with the boy’s home.

A day in the life of a rescued child

Bethesda Children’s’ Homes in India provide a safe and caring environment for children rescued from situations of extreme poverty, living on the street or unwanted by families. Very often these little ones, some just five or six years old, have their lives totally transformed by entering a Bethesda Home. They now have shelter, food, clothing, schooling, and most of all loving care – all these things we take for granted but are rich gifts to children in desperate poverty.

What is life like in a Bethesda Home? Here’s an outline of the routine at the Boys’ home at Cuttack. This home currently operates from small rented premises, and HFI is proceeding with the project for construction of a new premises tailored to the boys needs.

Each morning the house parents, Pastor M C Varghese and his wife Annie, and the fifteen boys aged 8 to 10 years wake up at 5:30 a.m. The boys first have time for cleaning themselves, and then they have devotions for half an hour. After the devotions the children are required to fold their sleeping mats, sweep their rooms and clean the front porch of the Home. Three boys are assigned the chores everyday on a rotation. They also see to their school work before they leave for school.

The children have school from Monday to Saturday, with Saturdays being a half day. The boys walk 15min each morning to the local government school, which is about 1.5 km from the home. After they are back from school in the afternoon, they are given refreshments and then are given time for playing mostly indoor games for an hour or so. At 5:00 pm they all get cleaned and have devotions until 6:00 p.m. They then do their school homework until 9:00 p.m. Dinner is at 9:30 p.m. The children are off to bed at 10:00 p.m. The children like to play and work with art and colouring when they have days off from school.

As well as receiving food, clothing, schooling and loving care at the home, the boys are engaged in a Foundations for Life training program. Over a period of three years this provides the boys with skills usually gained in a home environment including hygiene and toileting, eating and manners, responding to care, communication and social skills, self esteem, regular sleeping patterns and overcoming violent and aggressive behaviour.

The work of Bethesda Children’s Homes is funded by donations from supporters in Australia, UK and USA, as well as funds raised locally by the parent organisation in India. Your gifts to the Heart for India Trust Fund are fully tax deductible. Now at the close of this financial year is an opportune time to make a gift towards this valuable work where every dollar lands on target with the Children’s Homes in India.

New HFI Website

Welcome to the new Heart For India Website.
