MORAR, GWALIOR BETHESDA BOYS HOME, MADHYA PRADESH

Gwalior City is a District in Madhya Pradesh State near Âgra. It is called the tourist city of the state with the Gwalior fort and palace among other sites to be visited here. It is the site of factories producing cotton, yarn, paint, ceramics, chemicals, and leather products. Gwalior is also called the educational hub of Madhya Pradesh. Our engineering college and 2 schools are also situated here. Gwalior has a population of 1.05 million. 99% of the people in this city are Hindus.
Overall, the state of Madhya Pradesh accounts for the largest portion of mortality and morbidity in India The number of malnourished children in the state remain despairingly high. It is a matter of concern that more than 50% of the state’s children are malnourished. Main factors influencing this malnutrition problem are poverty, drought and the special problems of vulnerable groups like slum-dwellers and tribals. The Indian Planning commission estimates that the proportion of people living below the poverty line in 1999–2000 in Madhya Pradesh was over 38%, which is well above the all India average of 26.10%.
The house parents of the home in Gwalior are Pastor Gee Varghese and Daisy, who came to the home when it was opened. The home provides shelter for 7 boys of ages 9-12 years old, who have been rescued from destitute situations. Pastor Varghese looks after our church in the city of Gwalior and Daisy is a nurse by profession, but quit her job to serve God. They had call upon their life and felt the need to help children and wanted to be part of a Children’s Home. They have two children. They are thrilled in being to serve and help these needy children who were thrown out of their homes as their families were not being able to feed them. They come from the drought affected areas of this state.
The Gwalior home consists of a bedroom with beds, cuboards for their clothes and a small table for their books and toys. The hall is used to play, study and eat. They have one bathroom. As well as receiving food, clothing, schooling and loving care the boys are engaged in a Foundations for Life training program. Over a period of three years this provides the boys with skills usually gained in a home environment including hygiene and toileting, eating and manners, responding to care, communication and social skills, self esteem, regular sleeping patterns and overcoming violent and aggressive behaviour. The boys attend a government school which is about 3 miles from the Home. They are taught in the local language - Hindi. Due to lack of space they play indoors and a lot of board games. Once a week they are taken to the park where they get to play cricket. They love reciting verses from the Bible and have taken it as a challenge to memorise the whole Bible someday.
One of the children at the home is little Sanjeev Kumar, age 10 years old. His parents died when he was very young he was living with his relatives. They looked after him for a while and then wanted to abandon him. Someone informed his relatives about the home and so he was brought to the care of the home. Today he is a happy child and feels blessed to be part of home of love and care.
