Bethesda Children’s Homes

During the last 15 years, Abraham has launched initiatives to help the orphans and destitute children in India. Twelve Bethesda Children’s homes each provide care for 20 to 40 rescued children in an extended family environment.

Often the homes commence in rented premises and sometimes very crowded conditions. Each home is operated by experienced house parents who ensure an extended family environment rich in loving care, emotional development and social skills. This is a huge transition for children coming from the trauma of abandonment and starvation on the streets.

Where possible a dedicated facility is constructed for each Bethesda Children’s Home. This requires the purchase of land, generally about 500 sqm can be obtained for 40,000AUD. Construction of each facility by contractors is closely supervised by the experienced Bethesda team. This can be completed for 60,000AUD including basic furnishings and equipment.

Each Bethesda Children’s Home established by this means is also developed as a multi-use community centre incorporating other programs such as a sewing school for women or a leadership training college. Four more Bethesda Children’s Homes are planned for the next 18 months.

Bethesda Christian Schools

There are five Bethesda schools in three different states of India providing education for children in need. The schools are open to all children of any faith; the majority are from Hindu and Muslim backgrounds. By both instruction and example the schools promote moral and character development based firmly on Christian faith.

The care and support experienced at these schools by entire families has become a focal point of community transformation. Three more schools are in the planning.
